Sulforaphane, more reasons to eat broccoli sprouts

Written By Unieke sieraden on Saturday, August 25, 2018 | 2:28 AM

According to some studies Sulforaphane appears to be most protective against colon and prostate cancer but has also been studied for its effects on many other cancers, such as breast, leukemia, pancreatic and melanoma. The compound, sulforaphane, was particularly abundant in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts. Sulforaphane is naturally occurring in broccoli sprouts, which has the highest amount of sulforaphane.

Salmonella outbreaks, linked to backyard chickens and ducks

Written By Unieke sieraden on Thursday, July 26, 2018 | 4:21 AM

Children younger than 5 years old made up 26 percent of the people reported sick from the bacteria, the CDC reported. More than 70 percent of those sick said they came into contact with chicks or ducklings in the week before symptoms developed. The chickens came from a variety of sources, including feed supply stores, websites, hatcheries and from family members.

Backyard flocks can be a great source of entertainment for families and allow for the production of fresh, local eggs. However, the risk associated with owning backyard flocks is one that most people are not aware of, according to Dr. Casey Barton Behravesh, Deputy Branch Chief for the Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch for CDC’s Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases.

Written By Unieke sieraden on Friday, May 18, 2018 | 7:50 AM

But whatever you choose, just don't fry it, the heart group warned.

"Chia seeds, flaxseeds and walnuts are good sources of alpha linolenic acid (ALA), which is a precursor to EPA -- which is then converted to DHA," said Sonya Angelone, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Read more on WebMD

Zika vaccine, new study offers hope

Written By Unieke sieraden on Sunday, August 7, 2016 | 8:05 AM

The U.S. is the most recent country added to the list; last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed mosquito-borne transmission of the virus in Wynwood - a neighborhood of Miami, FL. Many people infected with the virus experience no symptoms at all, but for pregnant women and their babies, however, Zika can have very serious consequences. Researchers have completed a second round of preclinical trials of a Zika vaccine, and results show it offered complete protection against the virus in monkeys. Read more: Medical News Today
